Prof. Michael A. Borg qualified MD from the University of Malta Medical School in 1987 and subsequently pursued post graduate studies in the UK. He currently heads the Department of Infection Prevention and Control at Mater Dei Hospital, where he chairs the Infection Control Committee as well as the hospital’s Antibiotic Team. An Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, he also chairs the country’s National Antibiotic Committee.


Prof. Borg is a past Chair of the International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC) and an advisory panel expert on AMR for the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC). He has over 80 publications in the fields of infection control and antibiotic stewardship within international high impact journals. His research interests vary widely from the epidemiology of AMR, especially within the Mediterranean region, to antibiotic stewardship and infection control. Lately, however, he has focused heavily on healthcare worker behavioural drivers and the applicability of behaviour change strategies to achieve better antibiotic prescribing and infection prevention & control practices.
